ELMHURST, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's cross country team opened its 2011 campaign with a second-place finish at the Elmhurst College Earlybird Invitational Friday afternoon.
North Central College won the meet with 31 points, while Chicago was next with 62.
Junior Billy Whitmore (Rocky River, Ohio/ St. Ignatius) led three Chicago runners finishing among the top 10. Whitmore (left) placed third among 171 runners with a time of 19:25 on the six-kilometer course.
Freshman Renat Zalov (Buffalo Grove, Ill./ Phillips Academy Andover) and senior Mahmoud Bahrani (Vernon Hills, Ill./ Vernon Hills) (right) finished ninth (19:52) and 10th (19:53), respectively.
North Central's Tim Hird led the field, covering the course in 19:17.
Chicago returns to action next Friday at Aurora University.
