Maroons Suffer Season's First Loss

CHICAGO -- Scoring once in each half, the 23rd-ranked University of St. Thomas defeated the 20th-ranked University of Chicago 2-0 in women's soccer action Sunday at Stagg Field.

St. Thomas (2-1) opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Jaclyn Glaser lofted a shot from the top of the box over the head of Chicago senior goalkeeper Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel). Katy Scherer was credited with the assist.

In the 64th minute, Scherer collected a loose ball in front of the Chicago goal and fired it into the back of the net to give the Tommies an insurance goal.

St. Thomas netminder Allie Byron made six saves to record the shutout.

Chicago (4-1) outshot the Tommies 16-10 for the match, including a 9-4 edge in the second half. Both teams attempted five corner kicks.

The Maroons return to action Saturday when they travel to Bloomington to face regional rival Illinois Wesleyan University at 4 p.m.
