Maroons Win Third Straight

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- Four different players scored as the University of Chicago men's soccer team extended its winning streak to three games with a 4-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Lakeland College.
Freshman forward Matt Vecchitto (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./ Tremper) (pictured) got the Maroons (3-1) on the board in the 14th minute with his first career goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Sam Preston (Arnoldsville, Ga./ Athens Academy).
Chicago made it 2-0 in the 36th minute when freshman forward Kyle Kurfirst (Western Springs, Ill./ Lyons Township) tallied the first goal of his career. Freshman defender Jorge Sanchez-Cummings (Mexico City, Mexico/ Centro Educativo Tomas Moro) was credited with the assist.
The teams traded goals less than a minute apart early in the second half. After senior midfielder Alan Pikna (Wauwatosa, Wis./ West) scored his second of the year unassisted at 50:01, Lakeland's Craig Dekarske found the back of net at 50:45.
Pikna then set up senior midfielder Stanton Coville's (Powell, Ohio/ Olentangy Liberty) third goal of the season in the final minute of play.
Freshman Elek Lane (Eau Claire, Wis./ Memorial) and senior Chris Giusto (Davie, Fla./ Heritage) shared time in goal. Lane made a pair of saves without allowing a goal in the first half, before Giusto stopped two shots and yielded one goal in the second stanza.
Lakeland fell to 1-1-1 on the year.
Chicago continues its season-opening seven-game road swing Tuesday night at Wheaton (Ill.) College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. (CT).
