CHICAGO -- The 20th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team began defense of its University Athletic Association title Saturday at Stagg Field as it played fourth-ranked Emory University to a 1-1 tie.
Emory (8-0-2 overall, 0-0-1 UAA) scored just 44 seconds into the contest when Claire Rubel fed Charlotte Butker, who found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Chicago evened the score in the 76th minute. After sophomore Natalia Jovanovic (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren) was fouled in the box (pictured above), she converted the ensuing penalty kick for her third goal of the campaign.
After being outshot 5-2 in the first period, Chicago (5-3-1, 0-0-1) enjoyed an 11-5 shots advantage in the second stanza. Each team had two shots in overtime.
Senior netminder Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) collected six saves for the Maroons.
Emory goalkeeper Kaele Leonard was credited with three saves in the game's final three periods. Erica Stein played the first half in net without making a save.
Chicago wraps up a three-game homestand Tuesday against Carthage College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
